How Does it Work?
mcdougallbay.com is primarily an online auction website. Once users have registered an account, they can bid on any listed item; any time, anywhere.
How do I register?
To register, you will need to create your own account. The process for this starts with going to the main page of mcdougallbay.com. In the upper left hand corner click 'Register.'
For account information, you will need to include the following:
Account type, is this account for you as an individual or are you bidding on behalf of a business? Select one of the options from the drop-down menu.,
User ID is the name of your account that will display on items you have chosen to bid on. We recommend that your username is not personally identifiable to you. Individuals that choose usernames that are deemed inappropriate or misleading will be asked to change it to something else.
Your password will be used to access your account. Strong passwords include a combination of numbers, capital and lower case letters as well as symbols such as #@ or !. Make sure your password is memorable or kept in a safe location.
The secret question will be used in the event that you forget your password. The secret question can be chosen from the dropdown menu. The answer does not have to be personally identifiable to you but has to be memorable/attainable in the event that you lose or forget your password.
For the email section, input an address that you can easily access. This will be where you receive notifications, confirmations and important information on items that you have bid on or have won.
Fill in the required fields as they pertain to you. We require this information to ensure that all bidders are real, verifiable human beings. This helps prevent fraudulent bidding that would destroy the integrity of our auctions.
We require a credit card as further form of personal verification. Your credit card information is safe and secure. We do require a $1 verification fee before you are granted access to bidding privileges. This is to ensure the credit card is active and belongs to an accountable person or business.
How do I bid online?
There are multiple ways to find various auction items to bid on.
1.You visit our "Auctions" page to view upcoming auctions. Clicking the "Details" button on an event will bring up details and a list of auction items that are currently available for bidding.
2. Our website also has a search bar and categories drop-down feature. These are available at the top of every page. In this search bar, you can use various keywords to find all lots that contain the given keyword. For example, typing in "Jeep" will bring up "Jeep Grand Cherokee", "Jeep Compass", "Jeep Wrangler" if there are any currently available for bidding.
Selecting an option in the "Categories" drop-down menu will list all items currently available within a given category. This can be combined with the search function to help narrow down your search results.
Once you have found an item you want to bid on, click the "Details" button. This will allow you to view the bid page for that specific item. There you will see pictures, descriptions and current bidding options for the item. Please read all information prior to bidding.
In order to bid, you will need to input a value in the bid box next to the "Place Bid" button. It is in this box that you will enter the amount you would like to bid and click "Place Bid." A new box will appear, allowing you to either place an optional maximum bid or finalize your currently placed bid.
The value must be greater than the current bid price and must be a value consistent with the current bid increments. For example, on the truck above, you could bid $28,100.00 on your next bid or any other multiple of $100 as the bid increment is set at $100. The system will not allow you to place a bid outside of the listed bid increment. When entering a bid value, you do not have to enter the $ dollar sign or the thousand comma placeholder (,).
The person with the highest bid when the time left hits 0d 0h 0m 0s will win the auction pending the reserve status of the item.
Please note that most items are subject to a 15% buyers fee to a maximum fee of $750. Please account for this when determining your maximum bidding budget.
What is meant by "Reserve not Met"?
A reserve is the minimum price that McDougall Auctioneers can automatically authorize the sale of item. The reserve price is set by the seller/consignor. If the item/unit does not reach the reserve price, the seller is able to decide if they would like to accept the current bid price, negotiate with the bidder, relist the item or take it back off the market.
We do not reveal the reserve price as we do not wish to influence bidding. We encourage all users to bid what they feel the item is worth
The consignors will often accept the high bid price regardless of what the reserve is.
What is meant by "Unreserved"?
If the unit is "unreserved", the unit will sell for whatever its final bid is at, regardless of the bid price. The same also applies for items listed as "Reserve Lifted."
What is meant by "Times the Bid Price"?
On some occasions, a group of identical items will be sold "times the bid price." This means you are bidding on numerous quantities of an item for a multiple of the given bid price. For example, if a lot says "Patio Chair - Must take 4 times the bid price" and the current bid price is $15, you are bidding on four patio chairs at a total of $60 (4 multiplied by the bid price of $15) plus applicable Buyer's Premiums & Fees

Can I retract a bid?
Once you have placed a bid, you are unable to retract it. However, if you have placed a "max bid" on the item and the current bid is less than the maximum you can you set your max bid to 0 and you will only be accountable for the item at the current bid price. Once you have been outbid on an item, you are no longer obligated to purchase the item.
When can I view my items?
We encourage all bidders to manually inspect items prior to bidding. Items at any of our McDougall locations can be viewed during the standard hours of operation. Items that are located offsite will have specific viewing times listed on the lot page.
When can I pick up my items?
If you have won an item through the auction you will receive specific pickup instructions on your invoice to follow. Items located offsite will have a designated pickup time. Items located at our McDougall locations can be picked up during our standard hours of operation. These items must be picked up within 5 business days. Any items not picked up within this period may be subject to additional fees.
What is the bidding limit I can spend? NEW!
All new customers have a $10,000 bid limit on their account. To increase this limit, we require a deposit of 10% of the additional bid limit amount. This can be done on your account page.
You may request your deposit be applied to any invoices you currently have with a matching currency. This can also be done on the accounts page.
To request a deposit be refunded directly, or if you need any assistance with bidding limits, please contact our Payments department at
1-800-263-4193 or

What if I'm the successful high bidder on a reserved item?
If you are the successful high bidder on a reserved item, a McDougall Auctioneers sales person will be in contact with you to discuss your obligatory high bid within the allotted time frame.
Why does the auction close time keep extending ten minutes?
This is referred to as a "Soft Close" and is common within the online auction industry. The bidding is extended by 10 minutes from the last bid registered and will continue to do so as long as there is bidding taking place. The item will close once there has been a 10 minute dormant period of no bidding. This is done to prevent bidders from waiting to the very last second to place a bid and "stealing" it from the current high bidder who may have wished to continue the auction process. This method also more closely resembles a traditional live auction in that the auction continues until bidding has ceased.

How do I accurately determine Item condition?
We try to represent items as accurately as possible. All defects visible to the naked eye should be listed in the item description at the bottom of the bid page. However, we do not conduct full inspections. We strongly recommend manual inspection.
With all of our items, we recommend manual inspection prior to bidding. If you are unsure about the state or quality of the item, you are not obligated to bid on the item.

What is A Max Bid and how do I place a Max Bid?
A max bid is a feature that allows the computer to bid on your behalf in your absence. For example: The current bid on a vehicle is $6,000 with bid increments of $100. Your budget for the vehicle is $10,000, you can place a max bid of $10,000. If the opposing bidders only bid to a value of $8,000 you will win the vehicle at $8,100 (one increment above the previous bid).
If another bidder places a bid higher than your max bid, they will become the current high bidder and the max bid system will no longer automatically place bids on your behalf. At this point you can place another bid or cease bidding on the item.
You can place a max bid from any bid page. Enter an amount in the bid section and click the "Place Bid" button. From there you will be taken to a second bid page. From here you can either confirm the bid you entered or place a new max bid in the "Your max bid" field. Click the place bid button to confirm your bid.

2) Have repeatedly not picked up items after winning bids
3) Credit card on file has expired
